How to use the miswak stick?

There are many traditional and modern methods recommended for using the miswak (siwak stick), as found in both ancient texts and recent research.

At Miswa, we believe that everyone should adapt their use of the miswak natural toothbrush to their own comfort and needs, while still respecting the recommended methods.

Dentists often recommend the Modified Bass Technique, a brushing method we will present in detail further below.

It is generally advised to use the miswak stick after moistening it with water. However, one of the greatest advantages of this natural toothbrush is that it can also be used without water—simply moistening it in your mouth is enough. For better hygiene, we also recommend rinsing it with clean water after each use.

It is usually advised to moisten the miswak stick with water before use, but one of the unique benefits of this plant is that it can also be used without water. Simply moistening it in your mouth is enough. For hygiene, always rinse it with clean water after each use.

How to Prepare and Use Your Miswak Stick

When you first open the pack, you may notice a strong natural smell—don’t worry! That’s the aroma of a healthier mouth and fresher breath.

Steps to prepare your miswak stick (peelu toothbrush):

Soak the miswak in water for 2–5 hours until it becomes softer, then remove it.

Peel off about 1 cm of bark (using your fingernails or scissors).

Gently chew the exposed end with your molars, rotating it as you bite, to soften and separate the fibers into bristles.

At first, you may notice a slightly bitter taste—this is completely natural and only lasts the first few uses.

Once the fibers are separated and soft, use them like a toothbrush to gently clean your teeth.

If the stick is still hard, keep chewing until the bristles are flexible.

While it is still stiff, brush only horizontally to avoid harming your gums.

Once the miswak feels as soft as a regular toothbrush, you can use it normally.

⚠️ After use, let it dry in a clean, cool, dry place. Do not store it in the bathroom, as moisture may damage it.

The Modified Bass Technique (Dentist Recommended)

Dentists recommend the Modified Bass brushing technique, as it is the most effective way to remove bacteria hidden between the teeth and gums.

Hold the miswak at a 45° angle towards the gum line.

Start with the last upper molar, applying very gentle pressure.

Brush in small circular motions, repeating about 10 times per tooth.

Finish each area with a gentle vertical stroke, moving from gum to tooth, to push out bacteria.

Brush the outer, inner, and biting surfaces of all teeth with care.

Use your tongue to feel for any rough spots and pass the miswak again where needed.

Remember: the key is gentleness. The miswak naturally strengthens gums, but too much pressure can irritate them.

Renewing the Bristles

To keep your organic miswak stick fresh and effective, cut off the used bristle tip regularly and peel a new section. The removed part can be composted.

Depending on usage, renew the bristles every 3 days to 2 weeks.

Let the miswak breathe: keep it exposed to air after use.

If it smells bad or shows white spots, trim it and start fresh.

Storage & Shelf Life

All our MISWA miswaks are sun-dried for better preservation. They are packed in eco-friendly kraft boxes, compostable and sustainable.

Stored properly, they keep until the expiration date indicated on the package.

Once opened, they should be used promptly for best freshness.

End of Life – Composting

When your miswak stick becomes too short to use, simply plant it in soil—nature will take care of the rest. 🌱
